Is Bach a timeless genius, or a man of his time? “Oh he’s very much a man of his time. He’s embroiled in all the controversies of his time, and he was very conflicted in himself. He was certainly a difficult man. He had problems with what we call anger management, and he often got himself into trouble. I think he must have been hell to have as a father. We have records of composition problems he posed to his eldest son, where you can see Bach’s solution next to his son’s, and of course Bach’s is always better. Imagine trying to live up to that. But in some ways he was a typical German burgher, who was fond of his beer and pipe. He wasn’t polished and cosmopolitan, like his friend Telemann.”
